Five Things to Know About Melvin White

Posted Jan 16, 2016

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — The Vikings announced the signing of cornerback Melvin White to a reserve/future contract this week.

White signed with Carolina as an undrafted free agent following the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons with the Panthers, making 17 starts in 30 games and grabbing three interceptions.

Here are five things to know about White:

The Captain’s First Mate

White was teammates with Vikings cornerback Captain Munnerlyn for two seasons in Carolina. The Panthers went a combined 19-12-1 in the regular season. White tallied two interceptions in 2013, including an 8-yard pick six against the Falcons in the regular season finale.

A Former Gunslinger

White was a standout quarterback at Brazosport High School in Freeport, Texas. White, who switched from wide receiver to quarterback before his senior year, was a first-team all-district selection and was the offensive MVP of Brazoria County.

Nose for the End Zone

Despite being a defensive player, White scored twice as a senior at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. White returned an interception 89 yards and also scooped up a blocked field goal and took it 68 yards for a score.

Success Against NFC North Rivals

White has fared well against Minnesota’s biggest rivals. While with the Panthers, White helped beat the Bears and Lions and picked off Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The Basics

White is 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds and spent last season on the Rams practice squad. At 25 years old, he is one of more than 25 players age 25 or younger on the Vikings roster entering 2016.
