Professional Biography

Entering his 3rd season as the Vikings’ Director of Security in 2008, Kim Klawiter has worked with the team in game day and special events security since 2001.

Klawiter has a broad background in law enforcement and in the military, experience that benefits the organization as he has responsibility for the security of the Vikings owners, players and staff and the team headquarters at Winter Park. Klawiter coordinates with the Minneapolis Police Department for security at the Metrodome during Vikings home games.

A 24-year veteran of the Minnesota State Patrol, Klawiter retired as a lieutenant. He spent 15 years coordinating VIP visits to the state and was responsible for the State Patrol’s highly-trained Special Response Team.

Klawiter escorted Mikhail Gorbachev on his visit to the state and has provided security to the past three U.S. Presidents and other prominent public figures. Klawiter was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968 and served as a platoon sergeant in Vietnam where he earned the Bronze Star for heroism among other honors. He spent 14 total years in the military between active duty, National Guard and Army Reserve. After his return from active duty, Klawiter returned to school at the University of Minnesota, majoring in sociology.

Klawiter serves as President of the Law Enforcement Memorial Association, an organization that supports the families of officers who have died in the line of duty.

A native of White Bear Lake, MN, Klawiter resides in Arden Hills with his wife, Kathy. The couple has two children, Kelly and Kyle, and three grandchildren, Hunter, Tanner and Alyssa Marie.
