#4 – Vikings Draft Peterson Seventh Overall

April 28, 2007 - After the Arizona Cardinals chose Penn State offensive tackle Levi Brown with the fifth pick and then the Washington Redskins selected LSU safety LaRon Landry with the sixth selection, the Vikings pounced on Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson with the seventh selection in the 2007 NFL Draft.

The reaction from the 2007 Miller Lite Vikings Draft Party was emphatic and positive. After the Cardinals surprised a few people with the Brown pick and then Washington chose Landry, fans were chanting “AP! AP!” and erupted with joy when the pick was announced.

Peterson is the best running back in this class and is perhaps the draft's most intriguing prospect. He has a tremendous combination of power and speed, affording him the ability to both run over and around defenders. He punishes defenders and scouts describe him as a violent runner. The knock on Peterson is his durability.

Through his collegiate career, Peterson sustained injuries that caused him to miss significant amounts of playing time. After 339 carries during his first season with the Sooners, Peterson logged just 220 and 168 attempts the following two seasons.

Ultimately, though, the 6-2, 218-pound back averaged 132.3 yards rushing per game and scored 40 touchdowns. Peterson is a blue-chip, franchise-caliber running back and he joins Chester Taylor to give the Vikings a formidable and dynamic running back duo. Both Super Bowl teams last year had a two-headed monster at running back and it seems most teams are employing that type of attack.

The addition of Peterson to the Vikings roster gives Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress and his offensive staff an explosive playmaker than can turn the game around in a flash.
